Day 1. Ty Can – Vai Lung
3h walk 600m ascent
At noon, trek along a trail created by the French in 1930. Climb to Pao Vang massif and take in spectacular views of Song Mien Valley. Arrive in Lung Vai to meet the White Hmong and spend the night in a Hmong village
Day 2. Vai Lung – Cao
6h walk 400m ascent
Walk along a footpath of small passes which zigzag between the limestone pitons. After 3 hours, arrive in Lung, the White Hmong village. Visit the village and enjoy lunch before continuing the hike. Reach Cao village at 3p.m and spend an evening with the Hmong.
Day 3. Lung Tam Cao – Chu
6h walk 600m ascent
Departing at dawn, embark on a trek along the mountain footpath which runs between corn and hemp plantations. After an hour, arrive in Cao village before heading for the centre of the massif which is classified as a nature reserve.
Reach the village at 3pm and spend a night with the Hmong
Day 4. Chu – Seo
7h walk 700m ascent
Hike through the jungle on the southern side of the rugged massif, 1600m above sea level. At around 11:00am, arrive in Sin Chai, a Hmong Hamlet and continue along a trail via the Cu pass before ascending a further 500m on the North Phu Ta Ca foothills. By the end of the afternoon, arrive in Seo Lung, the White Hmong village that houses a group of about fifty houses which hang on the mountainside under the summit of the Phu Ta Ca massif. Discover the village and settle into a cosy Hmong house .
Day 5. Seo Lung – Phu Ta Ca Base Camp

From Seo, ascend 6 hours to the bivouac area. On the way take in the unique panorama of the Dong Van plateau, Pao Lung, and the Phu Ta Ca. Before diverging into the mountain rainforest, the track passes by blazing slash and burn areas where Hmong families carry out their seasonal toils.
Not only is Phu Ta Ca known as one of the last mountain jungles of Vietnam, possessing a colorful fauna and the scent of precious wood but also for its abundance of cardamom. This invaluable spice grows in the undergrowth as well as above the ground. The Hmong have some special dishes made of cardamom and they must travel far through the jungle in order to collect it. They also dry and resell it for use in Chinese traditional medicine.
Along the way, take part in some traditional Hmong activities such as setting up camp , bivouacs, tents, or spending the night in a mountain. After enjoying dinner, go for a short walk to observe the jungle by night
Day 6. Phu Ta Ca
6h walk 600m ascent
Climb the Phu Ta Ca (2276m) via its Northern crest, along the jungle footpath. From the summit, enjoy a spectacular and unique view of the entire region, including the Dong Van plateau, Meo Vac and Cao Bang province.
Descend southward, settling up bivouacs and tents in the jungle at around 3pm.
Day 7. Phu Ta Ca – Ba Tung Valley
7h walk 1000m descent
Descend towards Phu Ta Ca crest . Next, walk via a narrow valley snaking between dense jungles, sparkling waterfalls, and mossy underbrush before diverging into High Song Pha valley. At noon, begin the long, steep descent along the South Phu Ta Ca crest, eventually arriving in a Tay village. This village is one of those forming Ba Tung Tay, an Eden community valley of thatch roved houses surrounded by green paddy fields.

Day 8. Ba Tung – Ha Giang
5h walk 100m ascent
In the morning, follow a footpath of splendid paddy fields along the Nam River, which runs under the shadow of the latania palms before passing into a gorge. Arrive at Ban Do, a Tay hamlet surrounded by rolling paddy fields and jungles. Continue southward, passing more gorges. At around 2:00 or 3:00pm, take a 30 minute drive from Cac village to a Ha Giang hotel.
